You can buy these unique designs at our gallery in Berlin! Social and environmental sustainability, coupled with individuality, creativity and aesthetics - the unique vintage photo frames by LUNA Designs from Cape Town (South Africa) and the Photocircle portfolio are a dream team. Each frame is one of a kind and has its own unique story. The images are selected by our curators, matching the respective character and color of the frame.
LUNA Designs, a social enterprise from Cape Town, South Africa, is based on the idea of "upcycling" and all about social and ecological change: since 1996, LUNA Designs manufactures picture and photo frames made of recycled timber. Two years after the end of Apartheid, brothers Mark and Brian Fanner founded the LUNA Design Company in Cape Town. Their goal is to achieve not only ecological, but also social sustainability in their home country: they help the wood collectors - unemployed and homeless people from Cape Town and the surrounding areas - by providing them with a regular income and social security.
Altogether, LUNA Designs employs more than 50 people, who collect, design an craft away for LUNA Designs. At the same time, they now recycle almost all of the timber at the Cape. Of these approximately 40 tons, ten are used for the vintage picture frame - old doors, window frames, flooring, ship decks, window sills and the like; the rest is used as firewood or for construction of fences in the townships, or it is brought to the hazardous waste landfill. After further processing, the picture frames are treated in a eco-friendly and natural way, and finally sealed with beeswax. It is important to mention as well that the wood is not made to look "retro" artificially, but is subject to a natural aging process.
Whether you just need a great frame for one of your pictures, or you'd like to hang a combination of fine art photography and designer frames on your wall - we will help you find exactly what you are looking for! A particularly great fit for these unique and sustainable vintage-gems is our collection of nostalgic black and white photographs from the historical photo archive of Süddeutsche Zeitung: the archive contains countless photographic masterpieces, with a focus on contemporary historiography and historical personalities.
Upcycling what?! And what's so great about a picture frame made from wood waste? Since we have now brought these unique vintage frames from Cape Town to Berlin, you can admire - and touch - every single one in our gallery: the surface of this unique kind of frame is very special, you have to know. Treated with natural beeswax, they are smooth and supple, and yet each one is telling its own story: cracks, scratches and stains are evidence of an eventful life. But why don't you come over and see for yourself?
