Artist's description:
I perfectly remember the feeling I had driving in an open 1964 Land Rover Defender through the streets of Katutura.
Katutura is the only township in Windhoek, but far bigger than the “European” part of Windhoek. The township doesn`t have any sanitation or water system. The different tribes Namibian tribes live peacefully together, mostly in separated parts of the township.
Katutura is a very poor township compared to South African townships, but the problems with unemployment and alcohol are pretty much the same. The main difference between the township Katutura and South African townships in the Cape area seems to be a lack of violence in Katutura. An astonishing observation facing the poverty in the township, especially as most of the people seem to be quite happy and proud, a general discovery I made in the townships in the south african region.
