THIS EARTH FRACTURE ON WHICH MEN DECIDED, HUNDREDS YEARS AGO, TO BUILD THEIR BEDS AND ALTARS AND TO MEDITATE ON OUR HUMAN CONDITION, THIS IS A PLACE FOR WHICH I CAN'T SEE AN END AT ITS POETIC WEALTH AND PHILOSOPHICAL POTENTIAL. THIS MONASTERY (PHUKTAL, ZANSKAR, HIMALAYAS, 4067 M, 13343 FT) HAS A POWER ALMOST UNBEARABLE SINCE SO EXHILARATING. HOWEVER, IT'S HARD TO RENDER ON A PHOTO ALL THE STRENGTHS OF THIS LOCATION, TO DO IT JUSTICE. AS MUCH AS YOU TRY, SOMETHING IS MISSING ON THE PRINT: THE VERTIGO DOWNHILL, THE CLIFF UPHILL, THE POWER OF THE FAITH, THE INSUFFERABLE CLIMATE, ALTITUDE, THE OPPRESSIVE ISOLATION. THIS IS ONE OF MY BEST ATTEMPT. AS A MATTER OF INTEREST, I'VE SLEPT, AS A GUEST, IN ONE OF THE HOUSES ON THE RIGHT.
