The city of Venice is located in midst of a lagoon, consisting of almost 120 single islands in the northern Adriatic. Just under 260 km² of its entire size of around 415 km² consist of water. Round about 270.000 people call this unique place their home. The city accommodates approximately 150 canals and over 400 bridges.
Due to its fortunate geographic position, the northern Italian city used to be an important trading and naval power until the discovery of America. It was regarded as the bridge between Orient and Occident. Venice had its golden age in the course of the 15th century, economically, as well as politically and culturally speaking. Important industrial branches were silk weaving, glassblowing, shipbuilding, dye-works, the trade with spices and luxury goods, and, above all, letterpress printing – which was still in its early stages at the time. It was during that time that most of the palaces Venice is still famous for until today were built.
Lord Byron once wrote about Venice: ”Those days are gone – but Beauty still is here.” And thus, today “La Serenissima”(“The most serene”) is mainly a magnet for tourists from all over the world. Ever year, up to 16 million people visit the World Heritage cultural site. Center of attention – and actual center of Venice – is St- Mark’s Square with its impressive flagship architecture, uncountable cafés and – pigeons: curse from a sanitary perspective, yet blessing at the same time, since they make for a popular photo scene for the tourists.
Our photographers have captured the at times gloomy and mysterious beauty of Venice in their images of nocturnal wafts of mist over the canals and narrow streets, and human silhouettes in the twilight. Yet, you’ll also find light and summery photographs of bridges and palaces within our range of fine art photography. Order your favorites and add a touch of dolce vita to your living room.
