Beach chairs as photo art for your living room

Beach chairs can be found on almost all beaches of the seaside resorts of the North Sea and Baltic Sea; especially the coasts of Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are known for these photogenic objects. Nowadays the beach chair is considered a true cult object of German Gemütlichkeit (cosiness) which protects against wind, sun, rain and sand. A basket maker from Rostock, Wilhelm Bartelmann, built the first beach chair in 1882, and he is thus considered to be the inventor. However, the first representations of covered chairs can be already found in a few paintings by the Dutch painters Willem van Herp (1614-1677) and Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678).
