Artist's description:
Vincent van Gogh embarked on a series of seven paintings, encompassing Three Sunflowers, Five Sunflowers, Twelve Sunflowers (in a Vase), and Fifteen Sunflowers. These notable pieces were crafted between August 1888 and January 1889 in Arles, Southern France. Vincent undertook the task as he anticipated the arrival of his fellow painters Paul Gauguin and Emile Bernard, with whom he aspired to establish an artist colony in Provence. In a letter to his brother Theo, Vincent expressed, "I have devised a plan to create a series of artworks, with the hope of cohabiting with Gauguin in our own studio. They will all feature grand sunflowers... If I successfully execute this plan, there will be a total of twelve paintings. A symphony in blue and yellow. I diligently work every morning from sunrise, as the flowers quickly wither and the entire project must be completed in one sitting."
