Where the Wild Things Are is a children's picture book by American author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, first published in 1963. The book has been adapted a number of times, including as an animated short (1974, updated version 1988), an opera (1980), and a feature film by Spike Jonze (2009). Sendak received the Caldecott Medal for best children's book in 1964.
