The association Schülerpaten Berlin e.V. aims to improve educational opportunities for kids from Arab migration background and to enhance integration through intercultural exchange in Berlin. Volunteers can become mentors and are matched to their mentees in cooperation with Al Nadi, a consulting center for Arab women in Berlin. The mentors are trained by experienced instructors in order to acquire basic educational skills and an understanding of the Arab world.
A group of scholars of the "Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft" (Foundation of German Business, SDW) developed the idea in 2009 and won the support of a project competition by the SDW. One year later, Schülerpaten Berlin e.V. could be registered as an association in order to give it a more official context and to work more efficiently and extensively in the future. Since the start of the project, Schülerpaten Berlin e.V. has initiated more than 220 mentorships. Today, Schülerpaten Berlin's idea is to expand the concept to other cities and migration backgrounds in Germany.
